Charles R. Jennison

Kansas Jayhawker
(Civil War)

by Patricia R. James, author
published December 2005

Born in Antwerp in 1834, Jennison's family later moved to WI, then KS.  During his lifetime, he was a physician, Union Civil War officer and an elected politician. His name is closely associated with the term, Jayhawker.  Depending on your viewpoint, a Jayhawker was "an abolitionist guerilla in MO or KS during the Civil War" or "a robber, raider, or plunderer."
